A Journey of Community Empowerment in Long Beach
In the vibrant city of Long Beach, California, a grassroots movement was born out of the passion and creativity of local black and brown youth. Inspired by the spirit of unity and artistic expression, Oceanz emerged in the early 2010s as a collective of musicians, skaters, and dancers dedicated to creating art while challenging the norms of street culture.
From its humble beginnings between 2012 and 2015, Oceanz quickly became a beacon of hope in a community often divided by race and gang affiliations. Through their commitment to group economics and organization, Oceanz demonstrated the power of collaboration and diversity, transcending the barriers that typically plagued the city’s streets.
Central to Oceanz’s mission were their iconic “White Tee BBQs,” where individuals from all walks of life were invited to come together, set aside their differences, and celebrate their shared humanity through art and music. These events not only fostered a sense of unity but also served as a catalyst for positive change in local gang dynamics, challenging the status quo and paving the way for a more inclusive community.
As time passed, Oceanz evolved, growing larger and more diverse. However, like all things, the collective eventually faced the inevitable challenges of growth and change. Despite their eventual dissolution, Oceanz left an indelible mark on the city, inspiring a new generation to carry forward their legacy of empowerment and unity.
Today, that legacy lives on through One Current All Nations (OCEAN), a non-profit organization founded in honor of Oceanz’s pioneering spirit. Committed to building upon the foundation laid by its predecessors, OCEAN continues to foster safe and creative spaces for youth, artists, and entrepreneurs in Long Beach and beyond.
At the heart of OCEAN’s mission is the belief that by providing opportunities for skill-building, economic empowerment, and artistic expression, they can create lasting change in their community. Through local arts programs, innovative initiatives, and collaborative partnerships with residents, OCEAN aims to uplift and inspire individuals from all backgrounds, playing both small and major roles in shaping the cultural landscape of the 562 area code and beyond.
